Knebworth House

Knebworth Park Railway

Knebworth Park has had its own railway since 1971, when a 2ft narrow gauge connected the house to the Adventure Playground about ¾ mile away. The railway was stocked with ex-industrial locomotion including ex-quarry Hunslet Steam engines ‘Lilla’, Triassic" and ‘Lady Joan’ and later the sugar plantation locomotive ‘Sezela-4’. In the 1980s, a railway museum was added. The Adventure Playground was resited in 1990 and old railway and museum were sold.

In 1991 a 10 ¼” miniature railway was opened at the new Adventure Playground. The line runs for 1,200 yards and the working locos include three ‘historic’ items - ‘Pilgrim’ 0-6-0 steam, ex-Wells and Walsingham railway, ‘Uncle Jim’ diesel, ex-Hastings railway and ‘Jungle Express’ petrol ex-Paignton Zoo railway. The rolling stock consists of two rakes of six articulated ‘Ian- Allen’ style carriages.

An enthusiasts evening event will be held on 17th June 2010 - call 0797 2585527 or 01438 810931 for details.
