The Victorian garden front - fountains, statues and the startling "bat on barrel" gargoyles on the terrace balustrade and the library bay window. The "bat on barrel" is a play on the family name Lytton - "lyt" being an ancient word for bat and "ton" for barrel. These creatures had disappeared by the turn of the century for reasons of deterioration and taste (see next photo). During restoration in 1999/2000, however, this photograph was used to reinstate the four on the library bay window.
