EDUCATION PROGRAMME 2008
A message from Juliet Alexander, Before we launch headlong into a new year there is time to reflect briefly on the success of last year's education programme. We saw old favourites given a fresh twist, the introduction of a new trail which proved a huge hit and our national award for educational achievement. Now our thoughts turn to the exciting programme of events scheduled for this season.. We piloted our new Monsters and Mazes Trail for Foundation Stage and KS1 children last summer. Based on the positive comments from our evaluation forms, it was exceptionally well received. It combines the ever-popular dinosaurs with activities based on the 5 senses in different areas of the gardens. We look forward to building on its success as we encourage younger visitors to join in with what Knebworth has to offer. As in previous seasons, our Tudor Treasure Trail for Key Stages 1 and 2 continues to be the most popular booking. It provides a range of individual "hands-on" activities combined with cross-curricular problem-solving tasks to complete as a team. The morning's activities take place in the House and the afternoon is spent following clues hidden in the garden to solve a puzzle. On the basis of observing this activity day we are delighted to have been granted the prestigious Sandford Award for Excellence in Heritage Education. The Judge was particularly impressed with, "the quality of service offered through the education programmes, the interaction of the staff with children and the rounded experience of living history through inspirational activities." If your year group studies the Victorians, you may well enjoy our newly re-vamped Victorian Treasure Trail. Following the winning formula above, we have devised a morning of Victorian activities which take place in each of the rooms in the House decorated or furnished in Victorian style. You then repair to the Gardens to answer this. "If you could choose a famous Victorian, who "wood" you like to meet?"
For students completing modules in Leisure and Tourism, we continue to offer seminars on Marketing and other business related topics. We offer advice for trainee teachers who are planning a school visit. You will be most welcome to bring a class to Knebworth and can arrange tailor-made tours to suit your needs. We are also developing some professional development sessions for staff using our unique collection of archive material, artefacts, photographs and other first hand source material. TUDOR TREASURE TRAIL Knebworth House was originally a Tudor mansion belonging to Robert Lytton, King Henry VII's wardrobe master. Many changes have been made to suit the tastes and needs of successive generations, but various clues remain which reveal its Tudor origin. In 1571 Queen Elizabeth I stayed here during her Royal Progress. The Treasure Trail aims to recreate the excitement of her documented visit through the eyes of a Tudor child. A fanfare from the Minstrels' Gallery awaits you! Click here for a more detailed look at our Tudor Treasure Trail VICTORIAN TREASURE TRAIL Knebworth House as we know it today owes its look and feel to the Victorian period when the house was lived in by the novelist, Sir Edward Bulwer Lytton. His grandson, Victor, shared his love of writing. In later life he recorded his childhood memories of Knebworth. These memoirs provide first hand detail of how the house was run and are the starting point for the Trail, "Victor's Ventures". MONSTERS AND MAZES TRAIL The Wilderness Garden is home to 72 life-size dinosaurs depicting different species and time periods of the prehistoric age. This self-guided trail encompasses the dinosaurs, the hedge maze and other garden rooms. You lead your children in a series of activities which stimulate the five senses. Aspects of Numeracy, Science and Citizenship are incorporated to help to increase their understanding of the natural world. . Click here to see images of the Monsters and Mazes Trail
