STOP PRESS: KNEBWORTH HOUSE
WINS AGAIN IN 2006!

2006 Citation (from the Judge's Report)

Knebworth House offers visiting school groups the opportunity to have a rounded experience, to see a stately home as more than just a static walk-through museum but as a living home set in its parkland. The past is the past of the family still living in the house and the sense of this personal history is imparted to the children. All the staff who came into contact with the children helped to make their day one of learning and fun. There is an emphasis on quality of service which was clearly appreciated by the children and their teachers.

In the words of an accompanying teacher from Almond Hill Junior School, "They deserve an award. The visit inspires the children and it is a highlight of their year."

2001 SANDFORD AWARD

AWARDED TO KNEBWORTH HOUSE FOR
EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION

n Friday 22nd March, Gareth Fitzpatrick, Chief Executive of the Heritage Education Trust presented the staff with the prestigious Sandford Award.* The Awards, made annually through the Heritage Education Trust are non-competitive and recognise the provision of quality education in and about historic sites. Knebworth House has been recognised for its "Tudor Treasure Trail", a popular "hands-on" Activity Day for 7-11 year olds.

Looking at the familiar high gothic facade of Knebworth House today it's hard to believe that the building started life in 1490 as a red brick manor house. The Tudor Treasure Trail gives school children and teachers the opportunity to search out the clues to Knebworth's Tudor origins and to learn more about Tudor life in the process. This includes a variety of cross-curricular activities and teamwork inside the house and in the 25 acres of gardens during a school day. The citation for the award praised the appropriately costumed guides - "they are excellent".

The Activity Day was developed through the Knebworth House Education and Preservation Trust with invaluable advice and support from local teachers and the Hertfordshire Education and Business Partnership.

Tudor Days now account for the majority of school visits to the House but with the re-launch of theVictorian Days in 2007, they are destined to catch up in popularity. Other themed and individually tailored tours can be booked between April and September. For more information, please contact Christine Smith at the Estate Office on 01438 812661/810931 or by email at csmith@knebworthhouse.com.

* A national presentation of the Award took place in November 2001 at the Royal Armouries in the Tower of London. As only a limited number of representatives from Knebworth House could attend, the opportunity of a "re-presentation" at individual winning properties was taken.
