1974 THE BUCOLIC FROLIC: The Allman Brothers, The Van Morrison Show, The Doobie Brothers, The Mahavishnu Orchestra, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Tim Buckley. Attendance: 60,000.

For the first time we face the logistical problems of a crowd the size of a small town arriving in a field for the weekend - food, water, toilets, camping, rubbish... from the outset there were protests from local residents... Chief Superintendent Tom Oliver thought the day "would be good exercise for the men."... a toilet block full of people sank into a sewage ravine... the 60,000 Watt PA was the largest sound system ever heard in England.

1975 KNEBWORTH PARK: Pink Floyd, The Steve Miller Band, Captain Beefheart, Roy Harper, Linda Lewis. Attendance: 100,000.

...the fences had to be pulled down to let in thousands of extra people... the Spitfires arrived out of sync with Dark Side Of The Moon, the drug squad arrived in sync with the party afterwards at Knebworth House...

1976 KNEBWORTH FAIR: The Rolling Stones, 10cc, Hot Tuna, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Todd Rundgren, The Don Harrison Band. Attendance: 120,000.

...clowns invade Wimbledon Centre Court clutching a banner reading, "The Stones At Knebworth"- all very well, but Lord Cobbold's father, who was Lord Chamberlain to the Queen, had accompanied The Royal Family to the event... At Knebworth House, Mick Jagger leaves his Y-fronts at the bottom of Queen Elizabeth I's four-poster bed - they're still in the House safe.

1978 A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM: Genesis, Jefferson Starship, Tom Petty, Devo, Brand X, Atlanta Rhythm Section. Attendance: 60,000.

...the first concert at which a baby was born... where are you now?

1978 OH GOD NOT ANOTHER BORING OLD KNEBWORTH!: Frank Zappa, The Tubes, Peter Gabriel, The Boomtown Rats, Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds, Wilco Johnson. Attendance: 45,000.

...a new breed of fans, a new level of amplified swearing... while the Red Cross tackles magic mushroom season.

1979 KNEBWORTH FESTIVAL: Led Zeppelin. The New Barbarians, Todd Rundgren, Southside Johnny, Marshall Tucker, Commander Cody, Chas & Dave, Fairport Convention. Attendance: 200,000 over two weekends.

...the largest stage ever constructed, 570 loo seats, 750 feet of urinals and the biggest rock band in the world. Led Zeppelin played their last ever concerts at Knebworth, and it was the end of an era for the Knebworth shows. Both concerts overran, noise complaints were received from 7 miles away. The rubbish team struggled to cope with clearing the arena between the shows. The Police believed that 200,000 people had turned up each night, Sainsburys lost 150 trolleys and Tesco's 75% of their stock, and Lord Cobbold ended up in Court.
