NATIONAL GARDENS SCHEME
HONOURS KNEBWORTH HOUSE

A cedar of Lebanon tree has been planted at Knebworth House near Stevenage, Hertfordshire, to mark 70 years of charitable work by the Lytton Cobbold family on behalf of the National Garden Scheme.

The Hon Henry Lytton Cobbold, whose family has lived at Knebworth for more than 500 years, received and planted the tree with NGS representatives Mrs Edwina Roberts and Mrs Julie Wise.

“We are pleased to continue our family’s participation in such a worthwhile scheme,” he said. “The new tree will provide enjoyment both for us and visitors to Knebworth for generations to come.”

The scheme was founded in 1927 to raise money for the Queen’s Institute of District Nursing by opening 600 gardens to the public on one day each year.

Today, the NGS donates to a range of nursing, caring and gardening charities and has given more than £15 million over the past 10 years. The principal beneficiary is Macmillan Cancer Relief.

"From Clee to heaven the beacon burns,
The shires have seen it plain,
From north to south the sign returns
And beacons burn again.

Look left, look right, the hills are bright,
The dales are light between,
Because 'tis fifty years to-night
That God has saved the Queen.
