dward Bulwer-Lytton was one of the most popular novelists of 19th century England. 'Pelham', 'Paul Clifford', 'Eugene Aram', 'The Last Days of Pompeii', 'Rienzi', 'Zanoni', 'Last of the Barons', 'The Caxtons' and many other titles were widely read throughout the English speaking world and translated into many other languages.
ulwer-Lytton was an early admirer of Charles Dickens and helped to introduce him into the literary world. They remained lifetime friends. Dickens was a frequent visitor to Knebworth and with his celebrated troupe of amateur actors, performed in private theatricals at Knebworth in 1850.
dward Bulwer-Lytton was born on 25 May 1803. He inherited Knebworth on his mother's death in 1843 and set about transforming the Tudor house into a gothic fantasy. His personality still dominates the house today.
oet, dramatist, man of letters, he found time also for politics. As a young liberal he was a member of the Reform Parliament of 1832. Later, at the instigation of his friend Disraeli, he joined the Tories and served as Secretary of State for the Colonies in 1858-59.
is marriage to Rosina Wheeler, a strong willed Irish beauty, was a disaster. An early separation was followed by 40 years of acrimonious warfare, culminating in Rosinas incarceration in a private asylum following her vociferous intervention at an election rally in 1858.
ulwer-Lytton was made a baronet in 1838 for his services to literature and was created Baron Lytton of Knebworth in 1866.
