Inspiring Young Writers KS2/KS3
Through this exciting programme, pupils will develop positive attitudes towards and stamina for writing. Let your pupils experience literacy away from the classroom and be inspired by our historic House and its spooky stories! Your group will hear about the writers who have lived and worked here and how this fantastic setting inspired them. They will then have the chance to respond by creating their own text.
Your group will develop an understanding of narrative strategies to use in their writing, building a rich bank of ideas and vocabulary for characters, setting and plot. We can accommodate from 20 up to 120 pupils, so why not bring the whole of KS2 for a memorable day out that will inspire and improve writing at your school?
What to expect
Your morning in the House will consist of a tour of the House, visiting literary highlights such as the Library, Bulwer Lytton’s study and the Ante Room (including exhibits on Edward, Robert and Rosina Bulwer Lytton). In an age- appropriate way, we can include tales of the supernatural and how stories of Knebworth ghosts inspired Bulwer Lytton’s own Gothic writings.
Groups will then use the morning’s experiences, senses and imaginations to begin writing their own atmospheric story opening, beginning with the immortal line, “It was a dark and stormy night….” Who can write the best opening?
In the afternoon, let your group be inspired by our popular ‘Garden Story Trail’, as they encounter magical moments from diverse tales such as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Peter Pan and Twelfth Night. Alternatively, reward your pupils with time at the Adventure Playground, June to September. Lunch and afternoon activities are outdoors – please dress suitably.
Please arrive by 10.00 am to get ready for your day. We will meet your coach and show you the facilities. Your guide will come to take you through the Garden to the House where the programme starts at 10.15 am promptly The morning programme ends around 12.00 midday.
If you would like to book a visit to the Gift Shop during the lunch break, please indicate this on the booking form. Students will enjoy browsing the wide range of affordable souvenirs. Alternatively, we can make up pre-paid themed goody bags to various price points. Please discuss with the group bookings team.
Groups doing the Garden Story Trail will have their picnic lunch at outdoor tables in the Barns compound. Groups visiting the Playground will use their coach to take them through the Deer Park to the Adventure Playground for a picnic lunch and an afternoon’s free play. The Playground is available from June – September and has covered picnic shelters for schools to use. The Group Bookings team can advise and recommend afternoon programme options. Please advise when booking if you would like to use the bouncy castle and our fantastic drop and Astro slides (height restrictions apply). Most schools depart at around 2.15 pm in good time for the trip back to school.
